With his history of the 5th Infantry Division, “Red Devil,” Arnold Whittaker tells the story of American foot soldiers, riflemen, artillerymen, engineers, raw recruits, and professionals alike; many of them just kids, fighting their way through Normandy, the Lorraine, the Battle of the Bulge, and across the Rhine with General George S. Patton’s legendary Third Army. The author has provided us with an excellent first person account of his experiences, as well as the stories of his comrades. Mr. Whittaker has accomplished two wonderful things here: honoring his buddies and contributing an important volume to the oral history of WWII.
