Equally as important as our Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen who go into harm’s way in all our wars are the families who stay at home and support them.  Ladies of the Ironhorse tells the story of some of those important patriots.  This 366 page hard cover book is timeless and applies as much today as it did in any stage of any war.

Rhonda Eggleston, while driving home from a reunion of 4th Infantry Division (4ID) veterans in September 2003, had an idea.  She had been inspired by the strength of the wives of our 4ID veterans from WWII and Vietnam.  Her husband was deployed to Iraq with the 4ID/Task Force Ironhorse and she knew the current Ironhorse ladies had inspiring stories to tell about how they coped with their loved ones being in harm’s way.

Composed of stories from mothers, wives, grandmothers, sisters, and in-laws, the book is laid out like a timeline of the 4ID’s deployment, including the best of Bob Babcock’s “4ID Update from Iraq” email notes.  It is the story of Operation Iraqi Freedom I from the families’ viewpoint – and is equally as relevant today as the Global War on Terror and fighting in Iraq continues.  It covers the time period from when the 4ID received their alert notice and formed Task Force Ironhorse in early 2003 to the welcome home celebration in April of 2004.

What makes it relevant today as the Global War on Terror continues is the encouragement it provides to families who are supporting Soldiers who are deployed in harm’s way.  “Ladies of the Ironhorse” is full of inspiration and lessons learned for those family members who want to support their Soldiers from the home front.

Reader Comments

“This collection of correspondence between families and between the Soldiers of Task Force Ironhose while they were deployed in Iraq demonstrates how vitally important family support was to everyone involved.  Through these messages the reader will come to fully appreciate the love, the sacrifice, and the patriotism of our military families who remained behind.  Preserving these day-to-day messages, written spontaneously and from the heart, is an important piece of the history of Task Force Ironhorse.  The authors will know that they are deeply appreciated, and families who face similar separations can find hope, encouragement and strength in their words.”

“Because my husband was deployed to Iraq, we officially became part of a very large Army family.  I had met some of my new kin and it encouraged me to talk with other wives who have been through similar wartime deployments.  Our community support had been outstanding.  Our family had rallied around us, but there is just something about talking to another Army wife that helps you keep your feet on the ground and know that your Soldier’s deployment to a war zone can be tolerated, even accepted, for we too play a large and important role in our Soldier’s lives.”

“Sometimes it’s not easy being the wife of a Soldier – there are many lonely nights and sleepless hours wondering how your husband is doing.  Is he safe?  Is he warm?  Is he hungry?  But knowing that my husband is fighting for peace for his family and families all over the world fills me with pride and a feeling of security that nothing I’ve ever felt before can compare to.”

“I realize now, more than ever, that it takes a special kind of woman to be an Army wife; a diamond in the rough.  It takes a strength that goes above and beyond the call of duty; it takes courage and grit and just plain determination that you will not be beaten by your circumstances.  I am so proud to be a diamond in the rough.  I am strong, I am able, I am an Army wife.”
