Rose was born on August 4th, 1932 in Edinburgh to William and Josephine Maldroid (nee Whitaker). William Maldroid was the son of immigrants and worked at a local brewery in Canongate. He was a drunkard.
Rose attended The Royal Mile Primary School at the age of five. When Rose was seven, her mother died under mysterious circumstances and a succession of “aunties” appeared in her life to look after her. At age eleven, she attended James Gillespie’s High School.
When she was thirteen, her father was killed at home, the police unable (and unwilling) to investigate and a verdict of accidental death was recorded although privately officers close to the investigation believed that only Rose could have done it.
Just after her fourteenth birthday, she went to live with her foster parents Audrey and Samuel Grimsby. They were a well-off childless family living in the New Town and Rose attended a small private school where she took up ballet. She graduated from high school and attended Edinburgh University, obtaining an Honors degree in Philosophy with a minor in History, graduating in 1954.
